Exploration of the Lake District, England with GIS
I was exposed to an academic environment, process, and professionalism that I had not previously encountered.
Major: Environmental Studies
Internship: GIS and the Digital Humanities, Lancaster University, England
My summer opportunity has provided me with a more complete understanding of the Geographic Information System (GIS). With the aid of an amazing group of Lancaster University academics I have created my own project from the ground up, reading Dorothy Wordsworth’s The Grasmere Journals (a text I selected), extracting data from this text, and analysing the data through the mapping process.
I have also been able to explore the Lake District, the area written about in The Grasmere Journals, which has greatly affected my reading and understanding of the text and supplied another level of analysis to my work. My participation in this project has not only bolstered my GIS abilities, but also exposed me to an academic environment, process, and professionalism that I had not previously encountered or been involved with.
I am very grateful for this opportunity, and look forward to continuing my research in the upcoming semester
